The Coming Speech To Congress On Healthcare

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

So, President Barack Obama is now going to throw his last spear by having Congress listen to his excellent oration skills regarding Healthcare Reform (oops, I am sorry, Health Insurance reform).  In  next week’s speech, he will have two audiences to contend which are the Congress itself and the families watching in their living rooms.  The President will really have to walk a fine line of disclosing enough detail to where the average family stays tuned in and to where Congress can finally understand what he really wants.

Here is my prediction, the President with all of his skills will have a difficult time maintaining this balance, but he will make a good speech.  The Democrats will hear what they want to hear and the Republicans and Conservatives will roll their eyes knowing all along that he still wants a spread the wealth approach to Medicine.  In the end, the President may throw on the table some really big items such as an acknowledgement that the “public option” is negotiable.  It would also serve him well to at least talk about tort reform.  It will surprise me if he goes that far, but you never know as his Presidency is going to be won or lost with the entire Healthcare debate.

Moreover, what is going to happen to the Obama Presidency even if Healthcare reform does pass?  It’s just another budget buster, and he may go down as the President/Administration that truly bankrupted the country. So, no matter what, I really see the Obama Presidency resting on the successes or failures of Healthcare reform.  He has made many mistakes as a young President.  In particular, he left the healthcare debate to Nancy Pelosi, and that was a major mistake.   Yet, he still has the opportunity, to scale back the reforms to items that many American’s want which is competition between insurance carriers and an ability to cover the truly uninsured (which is not a lot in a country of 300+ million people)

I really have distrust and distaste for Barack Obama at this point, but he is still my President.  I truly hope he takes the opportunity next week to lay out a Healthcare reform plan that is uniquely American, and one that fosters competition with very little government involvement.  I can always dream.
