Presidential Nominees Almost Set

Well, it is all set and the Presidential election is going to be John McCain vs. Hillary or Obama.  At this point it simply means the country is going to move left during the next 4 years.  Although McCain is a Republican, he is not a Reagan conservative.  Thus, with Hillary fully believing in socialism and Obama even more to the left of Hillary, we are almost guaranteed to move to a more liberal agenda.

McCain is a good man.  He has really served the country well in both the military and in the Senate.  However, he is really weak on domestic issues including important ones such as the security of the border.  However, foreign policy is strength for him.

A lot of the conservative talk shows are really bashing McCain, which I think is unwarranted.  I am not giving up my conservative ideas, but I will vote for McCain even though he is nowhere close to the benchmark of Ronald Reagan.  He is what he is, a slightly to the left of center Republican.  However, I do believe he will control spending and not support major new social programs.  Thus, he will be my candidate.  I hope other conservatives will at least choose the lesser of the evils instead of staying home on Election Day in November.

On the Democratic side, it appears that the “ground swell” of support is going for Obama. Since this posting, he has won three more primaries and has now taken the lead in electoral counts.

If the choice is between Hillary and Obama, the call will be a tough one. Both advocate modified forms of socialized medicine. Both have the tendency to fall towards single payer systems operated by the government. However, Hillary has a track record from 1993 when she proposed radical and exhorbitant changes in the healthcare system in the USA. Her plans from 1993 she now admits are not “necessary”, but the whole matter begs the question that, if these changes proposed in 1993 were not necessary, are her plans today so? Has she in the last decade suddenly taken a greater interest in the operations of the industry? Has she suddenly learned more about the operations of insurers, underwriters, PPO networks? I fear the answer to all of these is “NO”, and so we are faced with still an uninformed politician seeking to solve something they don’t understand.

Obama may not be any better in the end, but if the choice is between the two I personally think Obama is the safer choice from what the democrats have to offer this year.
